36th LEEDS – LYON SYMPOSIUM ON TRIBOLOGYLyon, France. Tribology research has always been at the intersection of different scientific communities encompassing aspects of physics, engineering, chemistry and material science. Our research draws on techniques from all of these fields so that an immense range of methods, both experimental and modelling, is now applied to tribological problems. Recent years have seen the development of many new and exciting methods particularly in the fields of surface characterisation and modelling which allow us to study systems at hitherto unimaginable detail. However, one of the continuing challenges in tribology research is to link nanometre scale processes to macro behaviour. The theme of Leeds-Lyon 2009 will address these aspects and will focus on new research techniques in Tribology and their application to specific problems. Multi-scale effects: the tribological contact behaviour originates in processes on nanometre scale and interacts with phenomena on a macroscopic scale. Surface material properties: The development of new surface analysis methods (for example FIB, X-ray tomography, SPM, SEM) has enabled researchers to study and characterize sub-micrometer grain structure and to improve the link between structure, deformation mechanisms, mechanical properties. Surface chemistry: New techniques include advanced molecular spectroscopy often coupled with SPM and microscope methods, for example NSOM/Raman spectroscopy or fluorescence imaging. The analysis will provide fundamental information that is necessary to develop valid boundary lubrication models. Multi-methods in modelling: ab initio methods, discrete dynamics, molecular dynamics, and other models describing the nanometre scale physics cannot be extended to macroscopic dimensions (space and time) for computing time reasons. Hence different types of models have to be merged to allow macroscopic behaviour prediction. Furthermore, commercial "black-box" solvers have seen their performance increase dramatically, and can compete with dedicated codes. Technical papers are therefore invited from the fields of mechanics, material science, surface physics and chemistry that address these subjects. The organizing committee would like to invite you from all over the world to the thousand-year old capital of Japan in the early autumn of 2009. As science and technology are required to contribute towards achieving sustainable developments on planet Earth, it has great meaning to bring together top tribology researchers and engineers from around the world at the venue at which the important international meeting of the Climate Summit was held in 1997. Scope and Outline The scope of the Congress focuses on Tribology as the key discipline for technological innovation in the 21st Century. Tribologists and those who have any interest in tribology from all over the world are welcome to Kyoto to exchange research findings and to discuss new developments for tomorrow in all aspects of tribology. Draft Schedule Technical Sessions Symposia In addition, a collection of twelve topical mini-symposia fwill orms the backbone of the Congress’ technical programme. These include: the science of friction, Energy savings by use of synthetic lubricants, Tribology for automotive fuel economy and Hydrogen tribology for future energy. Technical Exhibition The WTC IV Technical Exhibition will be held from Monday 7th to Friday 11th at the Kyoto International Conference Center Event Hall. Its concept is "Energy Conservation / Eco Technologies in the World - Messages for the Next Generation". The technical exhibition provides opportunities for industries and institutions to demonstrate their products and up-to-date information on their technologies and future developments. WTC IV welcomes the manufacturers of automobiles, electronics, machinery, lubricants and chemicals, testing and measurement equipments, as well as those from other relevant fields. The exhibition is open to the general public and is expected to have more that ten thousand visitors; people not only from industry but also from neighbouring areas may visit the Event Hall. It is going to be a great show case for industries and institutions as well as a place where people from all over the world discuss the latest technologies in tribology. Exhibition Charge: JPY300,000 per standard log (3.0m X 3.0m)(excluding tax) For more details, please refer to the Exhibitors’ Guide which is available for download from the WTC IV website.
